The Mission

What are we doing?

During July, children in Costa Rica have a 2 week winter break (winter = rainy season). During that time Camp Penuel Costa Rica (our location) will be hosting children and running two 3 day mini-camps. The children come from various neighborhoods around Esparza and San Jose. In previous trips, some groups have had difficult pasts, others have never been to church before and are hearing about Jesus for the first time. During this servant event we will assist them in activities like: swimming, large group games, basketball, volleyball, ping pong, songs, devotions, crafts, etc. while the campers are at camp. We will also be helping out with various landscaping projects. Overall we will be showing the children and the Camp the love of Christ in everything we do

We'll also have our own Bible studies and group building activities throughout the week, where we will learn how to be Servant Leaders throughout our lives.

The Location

Camp Penuel Costa Rica is located on 70 acres in the countryside 40 minutes away from Esparza, Costa Rica. It is a beautiful, quiet place where you can see mountain and ocean views. It is a blessing for all who come! The Costa Rican children enjoy it as many of them are from the cities of Costa Rica, and are not often able to experience the outdoors like tourists do. They also enjoy seeing Camp Penuel's farm animals and fruits that are grown on-site.

We will have a traveling day during the Event where we can experience the beauty of Costa Rica from above. Participants will have the opportunity to join in a zip-line adventure, and tour a bit of the countryside. There will be some time for shopping that day as well.

The Purpose

Why does this servant event exist?

1.) So that we can see, share, and learn the Gospel in a different language and culture.

2.) To support the ministry to inner-city Costa Rican children.

3.) To explore God's beautiful creation in Central America.

The Details

How do I take the next step?

In the meantime:

1. Pray about it. God will answer you (even if the answer is not yet.)

2. Start planning fundraisers to help you with the cost of the event. Past participants have used car washes, bake sales, special event dinners and breakfasts successfully in the past.

3. The total cost will be $500 per person (not including airfare.) This cost includes housing and most meals while in Costa Rica, the adventure (zip-lining) day, transportation, as well as program leadership, LCMS Servant Event fees, Costa Rica exit fees, and a t-shirt. You must submit a $50 per-person non-refundable deposit when you send in your registration forms.

4. Start looking for airfare from your location to San Jose, Costa Rica. Plan on arriving by the afternoon/evening of July 1, and depart in the morning of July 11th. If you are close to more than one airport, be sure to check from each airport, as rates can vary widely. Because this is an international Servant Event, all participants must have a US passport to enter Costa Rica.

Camp Dixie is always willing to work with you to create a Servant Event that will work for your group.

In the past Camp Dixie has had groups that were willing to help clean up the grounds, and clear fence lines of vine growth. We have also had groups build benches for the outdoor chapel, and build the horizontal climbing wall for the Challenge Course. Groups are also working on updating the Teeter-Totter Log, and create a new element on the Camp Dixie Challenge Course.
